April is National Parkinson's Awareness Month

Let's look at the seriousness of Parkinson Disease ( PD )and see how we can support those suffering with this disease, to help them maintain their independence. There are plenty of definitions of the disease, like...

Parkinson's Disease (PD)

  1. a progressive disease of the nervous system marked by tremor, muscular rigidity, and slow, imprecise movement, chiefly affecting middle-aged and elderly people. It is associated with degeneration of the basal ganglia of the brain and a deficiency of the neurotransmitter dopamine. What does Parkinson look like?

Although PD is thought to be more of an older persons disease there are people of younger ages plagued with this disease also. One such famous actor, Michael J. Fox was diagnosis in 1991 at the age of 29. Such a startling and unlikely diagnosis, for a person at the prime of their life. Michael has gone on to continue to acting, write books and living a productive life in spite of the demands of PD. He also has a foundation that contributes to PD causes, https://www.michaeljfox.org/

Some of the signs and symptoms of PD

Diagnosis is based primarily on symptoms, neurological examination, imaging and responsiveness to Parkinson’s medications. Although the cause is unknown, their are some things that may contribute such as repeated trauma to the head, that contributed to famous boxer and G.O.A.T. Muhammed Ali's PD. Also, some medications can cause some of the same side effects as PD, so it is very important to not take other peoples medications and be followed by a certified health professional when on medications.

It you suffer from any of the above signs or symptoms, seek help early to avoid further neurological damage.
